You must develop all good qualities in you and suppress all bad thoughts and qualities from you.

Reshaping of nature only from the inside out.

Reshaping of nature only from the inside out.

8. January 1955. B.D. NR. 6158.

Nothing external promotes your thoughts and feelings, nothing formal helps your soul to maturity and leads it to perfection. Only from the inside out can the reshaping of your nature take place, why you men must often go into silence, to look at yourselves and to remove all that out of you, what disfigures you, what still exists in you as defects. From the outside your attention can certainly be drawn to this your work on the soul; you can be instructed, in which way you can do it, what you have to observe - what you must refrain from doing, because it is harmful and what you are to do to become perfect - but you must accomplish everything yourselves and only in that way, that you seclude yourselves from all externals, although you stand in the world and are forced to the performance of a duty. But this work on the soul is to be done at the same time, because it is completely independent of your earthly activity, for it concerns your inner nature, your faults and bad habits; it concerns the inner life of man, his thinking, wanting and acting, that - even so directed earthly - must radiate love, otherwise a reshaping is out of the question. Your work on the soul must therefore exist in that respect, to ennoble all your thinking and wanting and to turn to divine aims; you must always make an effort to lead a life in unselfishness, selflessness, gentleness and patience, peaceableness. You must develop all good qualities in you and suppress all bad thoughts and qualities from you. And all that requires the serious will to live right before God. It does not need to become obvious on the outside, i.e., a show is not to be made of it outwardly - but such life according to God's will will always radiate out onto fellowmen; it will stimulate to emulation and have a better effect than many speeches or formal customs, which still guarantee no inner change of convictions. Man can only change, when he seriously takes stock of himself, thinks about his defects and faults and plans to transform himself. And this inner change every man must do himself, if he wants to reach his aim to become perfect. Action must also follow the will, otherwise the will is not serious. And out of that you will again recognize, that the denomination is not decisive for the reaching of happiness, but always only the will of man himself, to kindle love in himself, which transforms him completely, which changes all bad qualities into good ones and which for that reason is the only means to perfection - but which can be practised by all men, no matter in which denomination they are. But all denominations teach love - for that reason they all can lead to perfection, but no denomination guarantees this perfection - only man himself can reach it through serious work on himself.
Amen. B.D. NR. 6158.
