Humility. Arrogance.

4. January 1955. B.D. NR. 6154.

Humility is the safest way to reach God, arrogance on the other hand the way, which leads away from him. For arrogance is share of him, who has once fallen, who wanted to rule and no longer acknowledged God, who rose up over him and by this means fell into the deepest depth. But humility acknowledges God and bows under him - it strives towards him and does not feel worthy to be near him. And for that reason a humble man finds the pleasure of God; he himself bows down to him and raises him; he gives him favours after favours and helps him continually up. And so you men will now also understand, that an arrogant man can never reach the father, because he himself erects a barrier between himself and God. He himself indeed believes not standing at the bottom; he is convinced of his value, that can he neither ask nor thank, to both God as also men - he feels above and for that reason comes away empty-handed, for he does not ask for favour and also does not utilize it, so it is offered to him. For he believes not needing it. And in his arrogance, he will for that reason also receive no favours. The father likes a humble child; but a self-satisfied has no love for him and for that reason is also not entitled to expect the love of the father, which is expressed in the gift of favour. But how rich is a humble man, towards whom God himself leans in his love and gives him everything, what he needs. In humility lies the acknowledgment of God as creator and father from eternity. In humility also lies the confession of the former sin. A humble child feels endlessly far away from God, and it recognizes as it were its imperfect state, its unworthiness, to enjoy the nearness of the father. But a man, who recognizes his guilt, his imperfection, seeks help and forgiveness. He will never believe with an arrogant spirit to be right or to walk right on earth - he will always recognize his own insufficiency and for that reason stretch up the hands to the father, that the father may accept his child and take pity on it. It therefore acknowledges God as its father from eternity; it inwardly turns away from him, who had pulled it with down into the depth. It wants again up, and it will also reach its aim, for a humble man receives favour richly, which gives him power of the way up - to God, from whom it once took its start, but failed to recognize him and for that reason has sinned against God. A humble man will receive favours without measure; but to an arrogant man the favours must remain refused so long, until he gives up his arrogance, until also he humbly bows in the cognition of his weakness and imperfection. Only the way of humility leads to God. Only the humble finds favour with him, for he is close to the heart of the father, and he completely professes inwardly his faith in him.
Amen. B.D. NR. 6154.
