Suffering of Christ.

Good Friday 23. March 1951. B.D. NR. 5092.

The sufferings of Christ on the cross are nowhere near to be made understandable to men, because in their imperfection they do not grasp, what it means for a perfect man to become a victim of sin, because the badness of men gained so to speak a victory over him, who had done no harm to them. The light soul of the man Jesus trembled before the spawn of hell, but it did not defend itself it let everything happen to it, but a horror seized it before so much dirt and maliciousness of men. It suffered indescribably, still far more than the body through that, what was done to it. The soul was in the midst of darkness, and its light did not endure the darkness; nevertheless it did not flee from it, because it wanted to drink to the dregs the chalice, to redeem men. It itself gave up the light, otherwise that could not have happened to it, what the love of the man Jesus wanted to let happen, to bring a sacrifice to God for the sins of mankind. It therefore let its light become ineffective and was in the midst of darkness, which tormented and frightened it exceedingly; which increased its suffering still a thousand times, because the agonies of the soul exceeded the bodily sufferings, what only a perfect man could grasp. But Jesus was perfect, as his father in heaven is perfect and still on earth in the midst of sin. His kingdom was the kingdom of light; the earth was the kingdom of Satan, and in this kingdom the soul of light let violence be done to it. And an extreme horror filled it; the purest and clearest being, which had ever lived on earth. It had to let it be touched by hands, before which it was horrified, because they stretched out to it from hell and seized it; it had to listen to words, which hurt it most deeply; it was so to speak torn apart from its world and left defencelessly to darkness, what certainly was its own will for eternities to accomplish the work of redemption, but for that reason not less horrible, because it was frightened and tormented to exhaustion. For that reason Jesus let out the words: "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" It no longer knew anything about its mission at this moment; it only felt the separation from God, from the light, after which it longed and for which it cried in its trouble. It was the most horrifying, what a man ever had to suffer on earth, because not only the suffering of the body had to be borne by him, but because the soul has still suffered considerably more, for which mankind has no understanding. And for that reason also no man will reach that measure, and no matter how much he would have to suffer, that the man Jesus has suffered, who already long before knew about it and prayed in his humanity: "O my Father, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." It was also at the same time the will of his soul, which had completely subordinated itself to God, to accomplish the work of redemption, and it submitted to its lot, because the love for suffering mankind was exceedingly great, but as also the sin guilt was so great that only the extreme agonies and sufferings could be valid as sin sacrifice, that therefore the man Jesus has brought. But the depth of suffering is immeasurable, as also his love was immeasurable, which let him take upon him all suffering of the body and the soul to redeem mankind from eternal death. Amen. B.D.
