A report from Tuesday October 6 2015 follows:

Spies can ‘take over your phone’

Spies can get "total control" over smartphones to monitor their owners’ movements, US fugitive Edward Snowden has revealed.

The whistle-blower, who is holed up in Moscow, said the UK security services had the ability to hack into phones without their owners’ knowledge.

He said there was "very little" that people could do to stop GCHQ, Britain’s eavesdropping service, gaining access to a handset.

British spies could tap into a device by sending it an encrypted text message and using it to take photographs and listen to conversations.

Snowden, a former CIA contractor who became the world’s most wanted man when he exposed US and British spy secrets in 2013, has previously exposed how the authorities could take control of laptops remotely.

But in a fresh blow to the intelligence agencies, he has told BBC1’s Panorama programme that GCHQ and the US National Security Agency had invested heavily in technology allowing them to hack smartphones.

The 32-year-old added: "They want to own your phone instead of you." He claimed GCHQ had a "Smurf Suite", a collection of secret intercept capabilities named after the cartoon characters.

So called "Dreamy Smurf" has the power to turn a person’s phone on and off without them knowing, while "Nosey Smurf" allowed GCHQ to remotely turn on a device’s microphone and listen to conversation.
