For the teleportation of quantum information two light particles are first entangled to a common quantum physical state. The two particles can then afterwards be separated, without destroying the common state.

The common state remains no matter how far the particles are away from each other and without that a measurable signal between them is exchanged.

One of the photons is then sent to the receiver, the other is superimposed in the sender with the information to be teleported. Thereby the state of the remote photon also changes automatically. In this way the information is transferred.

Since the remote photon can only be read exactly one time, a listener would be noticed in the line. Consequently a quantum communication network would be tap-proof.

The researchers at NIST did not sent their entangled photons to a place hundred kilometres away, but through 102 kilometres of wound up fibre optic cable. Other researchers had already teleported quantum information over larger distances, but not through a fibre optic line, but through the air.
