It was shown in the hearing that Rusbridger did not need the help. He ended with a recommendation what the members of parliament should ask the MI-5 boss at his near appearance before the committee. One urgently needs to improve the supervision of the secret services, said Rusbridger. “Some elements” are out of control. “That is a dangerous state”. Read more:

Here some extracts from a report I read today:

Guardian boss defends NSA revelations in British Parliament

NSA hearing in British House of Commons

"Do you love this country?"

What have the Nazis to do with Edward Snowden? In a hearing in the British House of Commons the Guardian editor had to put up with absurd questions to the NSA scandal. He remained sovereign and assured: His newspaper is not going to be intimidated.

After months long hunting against the Guardian, Alan Rusbridger is used to a lot but this question seemed to surprise even him. “Do you love this country?”, he was suddenly asked at the hearing before the committee of the interior of the House of Commons. Yes, above all he loves the freedom of the press, retorted the Guardian editor quick-wittedly.

On Tuesday afternoon Rusbridger had appeared before the British members of parliament to defend the publication of the secret documents of the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Whether he could confirm that he was here voluntarily, the chairman of the committee asked. “I did not know that I had a choice,” Rusbridger answered.

The hearing, that was transmitted live, which had the meaningful title “Repulsion of Terror,” was followed in the entire world. After all it was about the greatest scandal of the year: the data gathering fury of the American and British surveillance services NSA and GCHQ. Since the Guardian together with the SPIEGEL and other media had initiated the debate in summer, the left paper is accused of betraying the fatherland. A month ago the bosses of the three British secret services had claimed before the parliamentarian control committee, Snowden’s revelations helped al-Qaida.

Rusbridger now had to justify himself – and he did it sovereignly. It is the oldest trick to attack the bearer of bad news, said Rusbridger. What is more it is ridiculous to believe he had been able to prevent the publication of the documents. After all Snowden has consciously distributed them to four places on three continents: London, Washington, Berlin, Rio de Janeiro. Rusbridger also protested against the accusation of irresponsible journalism: His editorial department has discussed and agreed with British and American government offices 34 of their 35 articles before. Only with one single text to the GCHQ it was consciously left to avoid an order against publication.

Rusbridger behaved like a genuine English gentleman. Rusbridger could actually have turned the tables, because he had the actually guilty people in front of him, because it is exactly the parliamentarians, particularly the ones in the corresponding committees, who allow the thieves in the secret services to steal from people. What are the secret service people to do when their crimes are not prevented to do this by the representatives of the people? The really guilty people were sitting there right before Rusbridger and it is they, and not Snowden, who have stolen and what is even worse is that they continue doing it. Snowden announced the theft to the world and now these thieves dare to point to others and accuse them of some crimes. The greatest thief is Obama. So Rusbridger has now told these people what they have to do; it will now be shown whether they are genuine. What they also should really do, is to investigate why the prosecuting authorities have not yet issued international warrants of arrest against the ones in No. 10 and in the White House.
