Surveillance program «Prism»

Also Germany profits

Angela Merkel wants to mention the surveillance program «Prism» to Barack Obama at his Berlin visit in the coming week. But in general German politicians hardly express criticism of the secret service activities of the USA.

After the disclosure of the American Edward Snowden also Germany belongs to the important aim areas of the internet surveillance program «Prism».

The ministry of the interior now has sent a question catalogue to Washington in which it demands explanation about the possible spying out of German state citizens through American secret services. But with the exception of the liberal minister of justice Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger (FDP) most of government politicians hardly express outrage about the activities now having become known and emphasize the importance of a close cooperation with the US secret services.

Clearly more critical than the minister of the interior did the minister of justice Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger express herself. She spoke of an «over boardening communication surveillance» and demanded quick explanation through the US administration. All facts must come on the table. She also warned that through exaggerated listening measures the trust in the internet gets lost, which is inalienable for a competitive economy and the strengthening of human rights in authoritarian states. The FDP politician sees herself as pioneer for the protection of citizen rights against state surveillance. To the great anger of her cabinet colleague Friedrich she even refuses the implementation of an EU guideline to the data stock storage through which Germany is threatened by penalty payments to the amount of more than 300 000 Euro per day.
