Vatican: Cardinal to have spied out Curia colleagues

Few hours before the resignation of the pope rumours from the Vatican cause unrest: Benedictís most important helper, Cardinal State Secretary Bertone, is supposed to have caused that the Curia was kept under surveillance. No good starting situation for the conclave.

The most important helper of the departing pope, Cardinal State Secretary Bertone, is supposed having systematically spied out Vatican members. It was the aim to illuminate a supposed network around Paolo Gabriele, who was sentenced for document theft out of the private property of the pope. This was reported by todayís edition of the Italian weekly magazine "Panorama".

According to this Bertone has ordered the head of the Vatican constabulary, Domenico Giani, to keep telephone calls, conversations and email traffic of bishops and cardinals under surveillance. It is about the most massive and extensive listening action which ever existed in the Vatican. Who entered the Vatican and at what time and again left and who met who was recorded in detail. "Panorama" does not give proofs for these claims.

Explosive: Constabulary head Domenico Giani is a former secret service worker who was actually supposed to leave the Vatican in the coming weeks because he was talked about for the position of security representative of the United Nations.

Whether the publication of the spying suspicion is motivated at this moment politically of all times and is supposed to dismantle the "Papabile" Bertone for the coming Conclave, is unclear. "Panorama" is published by the publishing house Mondadori, where Silvio Berlusconi has the majority of shares. His daughter Marina manages the undertaking.
