Irish slaves

Overdue apology

The Irish Prime Minister, Enda Kenny, Tuesday wiped out a dent, which he had hit two weeks ago without need: In the name of the Irish state he formally apologized for a practice of the Irish state since its establishment in the year 1922, to lock up unwanted, homeless or orphaned young women in commercial laundries of Catholic nun orders. There the woman had to slave away without pay from early to late like slaves, often without knowing why they had been robbed of their freedom.

According to a – partly glossed over – report, which had been published two weeks ago, over 10 000 women were affected by this. At most one thousand of them are still alive; Tuesday several dozen sat on the visitor’s balcony of parliament. The report recorded unambiguously that the Irish state had known about it and had been accomplice.
