The prophecies of St Malachy, of an Irish bishop living in the 12th century, who is supposed to have predicted the coming popes and the "end of the Catholic Church". The mystics now wait for the 112th and last pope for whom it is said in the prophecies of Malachy: "During the sharp persecution of the holy Roman church Peter, a Roman, will rule. He will graze the sheep under many difficulties. Then the seven-hilled city will be destroyed, and the terrible judge will judge his people. End." Read more:

Today I read a book review and here extracts from it:

A just published illustrated book about the last puzzles of mankind wants to animate the readers to travel, but before the background of the renunciation of office of the pope it suddenly reads quite differently.

But before the background of the renunciation of office of Pope Benedict XVI the book now also still undergoes a dimension to the present situation. Because "Benedict XVI is the last pope t to whom a prophetic motto is dedicated", writes Di Martino in one chapter about the prophecies of St Malachy, of an Irish bishop living in the 12th century, who is supposed to have predicted the coming popes and the "end of the Catholic Church".

The popes are not named with their names of birth in the documents attributed to him, but described at the time with mysterious mottos. These refer to certain qualities of the popes, their origin, family coat of arms or to important events of the time in office. But the many indications make it possible to identify Pope Coelestin II he sat on the chair of Peter from 1143 to 1144 as the first named on the list of Malachy which contains 112 popes.

And when one now starting with Coelestin II goes through the list of Malachy until the present, then Benedict XVI occupies the 111th term of office. It is characterized with the saying "Gloria Olivae" ("Glory of the olive tree"). As always with prophecies this leaves much space for interpretations.

So it can be no coincident that the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanjahu presented the German pope two years ago with an olive tree as symbol for the glowing relationship between the Vatican and the Jewish state but all this fits well into the concept of the mystics however.

They now wait for the 112th and last pope for whom it is said in the prophecies of Malachy: "During the sharp persecution of the holy Roman church Peter, a Roman, will rule. He will graze the sheep under many difficulties. Then the seven-hilled city will be destroyed, and the terrible judge will judge his people. End."

So Malachy talks about the destruction of the seven-hilled city and then the end. Bertha Dudde talks about the near end and the end of a great city in 5004.

The expression the seven-hilled city comes from Revelation 17:9 and in that chapter of Revelation this city is called the great whore, Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth.
