The corona of the Sun is thousand-fold hotter than the direct surface of the heavenly body. Why it is so, we can now understand better. Thanks to a camera which took ultra-sharp pictures of the corona in 267 kilometres height.

A great puzzle of Sun research has come quite closer to its solution. Up to now it was not exactly known what mechanisms heat up the thin outer corona of the Sun so strongly that it is still about thousand times hotter than the surface of the Sun. Thanks to new pictures researchers of the US space agency Nasa could now for the first time find fine structures in the plasma of the corona, which come into being through magnetic field lines interwoven with each other.

When these fine structures dissolve, very much energy is released. Through this the corona can be heated up to several million degrees Celsius. The very much denser, visible surface of the Sun is clearly cooler with nevertheless 5 500 degrees Celsius. There were certainly already models which explain how the corona can be heated up by plasma waves. But this mechanism on its own is not strong enough to explain the high temperatures of the corona.

"The observations show that the corona is supersaturated on a stretch of about 150 kilometres with regions in which strong plasma flows occur and in which magnetic energies are released. We also see that the magnetic field lines are not twisted, but interwoven." The magnetic fields come from the visible surface of the Sun. Through heat caused flows they interweave with each other and transport energy into the corona this way. The corona consists of extreme thin plasma and reaches up to three sun radii into space.

As a result now two mechanisms are known how the corona arrives at its extreme temperatures: The plasma waves heat it up to about one and a half million degree Celsius. The dissolving magnetic fields give a further thrust of two to four million degrees.
