Abuse scandal in the Catholic Church - Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger warns of "half-hearted review"

After the failed research of sexual encroachments in the Catholic Church Federal Justice Minister Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger sends appeal to the bishops. The FDP politician defends the Kriminologische Forschungsinstitut (criminalistic research institution), which accuses the church of attempted censorship. The church higher-ups counter with their own criticism.

The Deutsche Bischofskonferenz (German bishop conference) has stopped the study to the abuse in the Catholic Church because of differences with the investigating institution; now the Federal Justice Minister Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger intervenes into the case.

she calls upon the church higher-ups to take action. "The accusation that censorship and wishes to control hinder an independent review should quickly be eliminated through the chairman of the bishop conference", she said.

At the same time the deputy FDP chairwoman emphasized her high regard for the Kriminologische Forschungsinstitut Niedersachsen KFN which was to investigate the abuse cases. The institution is one of "the first addresses to undertake an independent scientific review on the basis of personal files since 1945", the minister said.

Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger appealed to the church to have the abuse cases reviewed externally. "It is a necessary and overdue step that the Catholic Church opens itself and for the first time enables experts foreign to the church to have access to the archives of the church." The dramatic upheavals of the year 2010 should not be allowed to "drain away in a half-hearted review," said the Liberal. She admonished to take other countries as example in which the church opened itself to independent scientific review.

The director of KFN, Christian Pfeiffer, had first brought severe accusations against the Catholic Church. The project failed due to censorship and wishes to control of the church, he said.

Contrary to the original agreement the church had insisted to be allowed to have a say in the publication of the research results, as well as the selection of involved collaborators. Pfeiffer now wants to advance his own investigation. For this he called upon church abuse victims to get into contact with his institution. After this had already investigated 500 victims of abuse for another study through different support groups, these results should be compared by means of anonym questioning with those of victims of church abuse.
