Today I read articles about the Higgs boson. Here extracts from them:

 

In summer physicists announced the discovery of a boson. Until today it is not quite clear whether it really is the Higgs particle. In future they want to search for further particles and dark matter.

Some months and billions of analysed and evaluated data after this presentation, now also physicists speak of a scientifically secured discovery of a new particle. "But still it is not clear whether it is ‚the Higgs‘," says particle physicist Joachim Mnich who works at the accelerator Desy in Hamburg and Cern.

"The analysis of the data is really a little bit more complicated than one has imagined." With further data, which are to be analysed and evaluated until spring of next year, it can be decided whether the discovery is a Higgs particle, says Mnich: "Whether it is the only one which is forecast in the standard model, or whether there are more Higgs, this question will keep us still busy for several years."

The particle accelerator LHC will supply no further data in the coming two years. It is getting serviced and prepared so that positive loaded particles, protons, can collide with almost double the speed than up to now. The then possible 14 teraelectronvolt were never reached at particle accelerators.

Later the LHC is to be built up and supply data until at least the year 2030.

In summer particle physicists possibly made their discovery of the century: At the European nuclear research centre Cern near Geneva they observed a new elementary particle, which up to now was lacking in their collection. With a high probability it is about the so-called Higgs boson, the last missing building block in the standard model of particle physics. It explains how all other particles, even all matter, gets a mass. Also five months after this discovery Prof. Rolf-Dieter Heuer does not want to commit himself that the mite really is the long sought Higgs particle. "We have included further data; through it the certainty of our results has further increased. But only when we have analysed and evaluated all data from this year, will we really be sure", he said on Tuesday at his visit of the national acceleration centre Desy (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) [German electrons synchrotron] in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld.

Heuer: "We now seek for a certain property of the new particle – it is not allowed to have an own spin. I assume that we will have identified this property until April 2013 at the latest."
