Entanglement of a quantum bit with a mobile photon

Quantum mechanics is notorious to be a strain on common sense. Above that point to be delighted by it, scientists are beyond a long time ago. They rather understand quantum effects like the superposition of states or the entanglement of particles as chance to communicate bug-prove and build faster computers. Two research groups independent of each other now succeeded in an important step in this direction. For the first time they could entangle a light particle with the spin of an electron, which is caught in a quantum point.

Physicists speak of an entanglement when two quantum objects are so intimately weaved into each other in their properties that a measurement at one of the two immediately also fixes the state of the other. Theoretically this property allows calculating very efficiently with quantum bits – when there would not be the difficulty to interlink many quantum bits among themselves.

The working group of Atac Imamoglu of the ETH Zürich decided for colour. It sent the photon through a polarisation filter and so extinguished the correlation between spin and polarisation. The working group of Kristiaan de Greve of the Stanford University however erased the colour information so that only the correlation between the spin of the electron and the polarisation remained.
