Team around Anton Zeilinger produces entanglement of greatest quantum numbers

One of the most surprising phenomena of quantum physics, about which we have to rack our brains most, is entanglement. Entangled particles behave so as if they can influence one other, although they are separated spatially from each other. A group of researchers around Anton Zeilinger of the quantum physics institutes of the University Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Science has now undertaken an experiment to test the limits of the quantum mechanical entanglement with the help of spinning light particles.

This, one has to imagine somehow like this: An ice-dancer could perform a pirouette according to the laws of quantum physics, where she rotates to the left and to the right at the same time. Moreover her rotation would still be strongly correlated with the rotation direction of a second dancer, which is entangled with her, even so both dancers are far apart of each other.

The faster the quantum ice-dancers rotate, the greater is the quantum number of their angular momentum. "In our experiment we have entangled the greatest quantum numbers of particles of any kind, which have ever been measured. With that we have established a small world record", says Anton Zeilinger.
