Fastness and efficiency of biometric recognition algorithms, but above all reliability: The researchers used a webcam to take photos of bypassing students on the campus and matched them with Facebook profile photos. There every third student was recognized algorithmically within three seconds. Read more:

At the beginning of this month we had 2012 Oct 04 (2) – Face recognition and there it was mentioned that CCTV systems are capable of identifying and tracking a person’s face from 800m away.

Today now I read again something about face recognition and bring excerpts from it.

Such information lets the conviction grow that today it is almost futile wanting to protect oneself against all this surveillance.

Perhaps it is good to know something about these things and not to be too naïve and to simply not participate in many of these things, but real protection can only exist by more and more completely relying on the protection of God, to intellectually realize this and to consciously again and again make oneself aware of it. Such a help for this one can find on the webpage 2011 Aug 06 – No weapon formed against me shall prosper.

Here now the excerpts:

What a face can all reveal

Biometric data are a quite particular matter. Facebook has switched off the automatic face recognition in Europe after violent protests, for that Google now modernizes hard.

Facebook has switched off automatic face recognition in Europe – but the competition does not sleep

Face pictures are data of special nature: Besides the outer phenotype, they show gender, ethnic descent, age, even dispositions of the portrayed. Once these details are recorded, they can get processed algorithmically. The recording and evaluation of these biometric data with Facebook continued despite broad critic, equally the proposals of markings to classify men automatically. The actual face measurement of the portrayed was also continued; typically the distance between eyes, nose and ears is recorded on the occasion.

But when the protests have now failed to appear, the biometric recognition is by no means dropped. Research has produced astonishing developments in the last years. That concerns fastness and efficiency of biometric recognition algorithms, but above all reliability. Last year researchers of the University Carnegie Mellon investigated profile photos of unknown persons on a flirtation platform and matched it algorithmically with profile photos publically available on Facebook. Every tenth person was immediately identified there. In a second step the researchers used a webcam to take photos of bypassing students on the campus and matched them again with Facebook profile photos. There even every third student was recognized algorithmically within three seconds.
