Today I read reports about the physic Nobel prize 2012. It goes to two quantum opticians: Serge Haroche und David Wineland.

Wineland’s techniques have opened new possibilities to examine expressions of quantum physics experimentally and to study them in detail. To force a kind of cross existence on a simple loaded beryllium ion was successful, in which it was in two quantum states at the same time – a behaviour that has no equivalent in the everyday world. But that was only the first step. The ion was moved a special pendulum movement through further laser pulses. In the process the one part of the superposition moved to the right and the other to the left.

What could be achieved with one single ion, Wineland and his colleagues have in the meantime also realized with several beryllium ions, which are lined up like pearls of a chain. Every particle is stimulated with a corresponding laser pulse and transported into a superposition state. Through gentle pushes between the particles the quantum states are transmitted from one neighbour to the next, without that these being in direct contact. Thereby the particles show an entangled behaviour. When the state of one ion is determined then immediately also the state of the entangled partner has been fixed – a behaviour which Albert Einstein once described as ghostlike remote effect.

The two scientists had made "quite spectacular progress over the last decade or so, where you can start to really control systems at the quantum level, manipulate them and move them around in a way that is unimaginable when they first started."
