Today I read an article that reports about tests of Austrian physicists around Anton Zeilinger and Chinese scientists around Jian-Wei Pan. Entangled photons have been transmitted over constantly increasing distances. Now follow excerpts:

 

Einstein spooks in Tibet and on the Canary Islands: Chinese and Austrian physicists transmit quantum states of photons over a distance of hundred kilometres and further.

The transmission of quantum qualities from one light particle to another, further remote, so-called teleportation, has already repeatedly been demonstrated successfully last two years ago in an open land test over a distance of 16 kilometres. Now just two research groups report new spectacular results. While Chinese scientists have transmitted quantum states of photons over a distance of about hundred kilometres, Austrian physicists even succeeded to teleport the qualities of light quanta 144 kilometres. As places for the experiments the researchers chose the Tibetan highland and the Canary Islands respectively.

All experiments to teleportation rest on a concept which was sketched for the first time 1993 by the IBM Research Center in Yorktown Heights (New York). Charles Bennett and his colleagues suggested then to use pairs of entangled particles as mediators for the quantum states to be teleported. Entangled particles are especially suitable for this because a particle immediately feels it when its partner is subject to a manipulation independent of how far it is away. Albert Einstein once described this behaviour as spooky remote effect. Such correlating particles come into being when for instance ultraviolet light is focussed upon a non-linear crystal. In the process an ultraviolet photon changes into two entangled red photons A and B, which fly away in two different directions.
