Today I read an article from which I now bring excerpts:

 

The research teams around Vienna quantum physicists Caslav Brukner, Philip Walther und Anton Zeilinger have shown that also the so-called "quantum discord" is sufficient for a successful remote establishment of a quantum state. This measure indicates how strong a system is disturbed when an observer measures its properties – building up on Erwin Schrödinger’s fundamental realisation that an influencing of a part through a measurement from outside also changes the state of the particle entangled with it.

With the help of quantum mechanically prepared photon pairs the researchers have investigated the remote establishment of quantum states. "Through the measurement of the polarization state of a photon we can remotely establish the state of the partner photon belonging to it", explains Walther. "In the experiment we observed how the variation of the quantum discord has an effect on the quality of the state we have established remotely." With it the research team could demonstrate that the remote establishment of quantum states is even possible without entanglement provided quantum discord is in the system.
