Germany: For the first time diocese dismisses priest for abuse

For the first time in recent history the diocese dismissed a priest for sexual abuse from the cleric profession.

A priest who is to have abused five underage boys has been dismissed by the diocese Trier. That means the church law’s maximum penalty.

The Trier Bishop Stephan Ackermann for the first time dismissed a priest from the cleric profession for sexually abuse of children. Therefore he imposed the church law’s maximum penalty. The priest, who no longer had a pastoral assignment, loses all rights connected with his office. His retirement income was also lessened.

The priest has abused five underage boys between 1966 and 1980, with two also over a longer time period, the diocese said. A declaration filed by the diocese with the prosecution authorities was not further pursued for statute of limitations for prosecuting the crimes had expired.

It was for the first time in the recent history of the diocese that the punishment of a priest for sexual abuse of children and youth was pronounced. The congregation of faith in Rome has agreed.

The bishop has informed the victims of the priest about the decision and expressed his regret about their suffering, the diocese said further. At the same time Ackermann apologized to the victims “for that what a priest of our diocese has done, well knowing, that with that it cannot be undone what you have experienced.”

Up to now the diocese Trier introduced 16 church law pre-investigations for sexual abuse since February 2010. This is the first case which ends with the deprivation of priest rights, it was said.
