Mobile phone surveillance: Authorities get a fix on mobile phones a thousand times a day

Silent mail only works from person to person well – in the mobile phone network authorities use it hundred thousand times to locate telephones.

Police, customs and secret service use up to now to an unknown extent a location process via silent SMS – with it every mobile phone user can be tracked down without him realizing it. Data protectionists are horrified.

German authorities have sent so-called silent surveillance SMSs to mobile telephones to an unknown extent up to now. In the year 2010 the customs search authorities used this method about 237 000 times, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution 108.000 times and the Federal Office for Criminal Investigation 96.000 times.

With these “silent” SMSs police, customs and secret service can for instant find out over which radio cell a mobile phone just sends and with it locate the mobile phone user at any time. The “silent” SMSs of the monitor then force from the respective mobile phone an imperceptible communication event with the nearest radio cell. After that authorities can order the telecommunication supplier to hand over of the location data. The police use “silent” SMSs regularly to track down suspects via locating of their mobile phone number and to arrest. The secret service also draws up movement pictures of persons and supports observations. In a big way were radio cell data were analysed with demonstrations as for instance in February 2011 in Dresden.

Experts of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) call the mobile phone therefore a “localizer bug” already a long time. How successful the locating takes place depends on the area of the respective radio cell. Their radius is, depending on technic, landscape und population density, about hundred metres to several kilometre.
