Feverishly the Cern researchers look for the Higgs particle. Up to now they could not prove it but now one of them announces: In a few months the search will be ended.

One of the scientists at the nuclear research centre Cern at Geneva believes that the Higgs particle is found by August or September of this year.

Particle physics researchers work for decades with the standard model; experiments have confirmed large areas of it. Only a decisive element is missing: “The standard model only then works right when one assumes that particles have no mass. But they have of course mass. It is only not clear where from this mass comes. In case the Higgs particle exists the puzzle would be solved”.

If it would not exist the entire model would be called into question.

To find the Higgs particle was one of the main objects when the particle accelerator LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at the research centre Cern was built. Milliards were pumped into the project.

With their experiments the physicists could more and more narrow down the energy area in which they look for the particle. At a conference in July 2011 they showed themselves optimistic: They had discovered promising signals in the interval of 115 to 145 giga electron volt (GeV).

At a subsequent conference in the middle of August the experts were suddenly far more sceptic than before. Because in the meantime the data basis had actually doubled – but the number of indications of the existence of the Higgs particle proved to be less significant statistically. A step backwards.

In December finally the physicist Fabiola Gianotti of the Atlas experiment announced the tracks of the particle concentrate at a mass of about 126 giga electron volt. “But it is too early for concluding results”, she added. Further studies and data would be necessary.

In case the particle should not be found until autumn, sufficient data would be available to exclude the existence of the particle. “Then there has to be another mechanism for mass”.
