It is so pleasant to hear about scientists who really know something about their field and talk about it and today I read an article about such a man and want to bring some excerpts from this article.

It is about forgiveness and about psychology.

The article starts with a report how a man had to watch how his sister is shot and his father is seriously wounded.

But after the incident he saw himself incapable of banishing strong feelings of revenge out of his head. And so he prescribed for himself the forgiving of the act – so to speak as life’s work.

“I believed that every man can achieve everything what he has resolved to do, as long as he only works hard enough for it”, the researcher writes, “for everyone is able to influence his mental and emotional reactions and consequently to control them.”

Even if it seems to be inhuman after such an experience: His colleagues agree with him.

In the beginning stands often the resolution that something has to change.

Because the inner suffering, the brooding, the hostility, rage, grief and thirst for revenge determine the own life daily.

They recorded the brain activities of test subjects which thought of an experienced hurt. In the process the anterior cingulum cortex (ACC) lighted up in the scanner, an area which reacts to physical and psychic pain among other things.

The smallest activity in the ACC showed however with those who make an intensive effort to forgive what happened. According to the opinion of many researchers the first step and the prerequisite for forgiveness are to empathize with the opponent.

On the other hand empathy has likewise in other studies been connected with the ACC. Little by little a new perspective develops upon what happened – and with it also the feelings change.
