The clergy takes Ahmadinejad apart

The Iranian president is weakened through the struggle for power with the leader of the revolution.

On Sunday Iran’s President Ahmadinejad has assured his loyalty to the revolutionary leader Khamenei for the second time in this week. Before he was accused of disobedience.

In the government meeting of Sunday the Iranian President Ahmadinejad has declared that his government will carry on defending the rule of the highest jurist, therefore of revolutionary leader Ali Khamenei. After a violent campaign in the Iranian media against the president because of disobedience to Khamenei, Ahmadinejad now seems to have submitted himself. The president had attracted the anger of the ruling clergy because with an 11 day “strike” he had resisted an order of Khamenei.

The power play had started with the refusal of Khamenei to accept the dismissal of the secret service minister Heidar Moslehi. During eleven days Ahmadinejad no longer put in an appearance in public and no longer took part in government meetings. In the conservative media the attacks against the president and his chief of staff, Esfandiar Rahim Mashai, occurred increasingly often.

Several members of the circle around Ahmadinejad were arrested. Among them was a certain Abbas Ghaffari, whom the media described as Ahmadinejad’s exorcist, and of who they say entreats spirits.

Also the prayer leader of the presidency’s office, Abbas Amirifar, belongs to the arrested. He had produced a film about the hidden Imam and let it distribute on DVD. The hidden Imam or Mahdi is a Messianic figure in Shiite popular belief, which is to help justice to victory at the end of times. Ahmadinejad himself expects the early return of the Mahdi and portrays himself as his pioneer. The Ayatollahs fear Ahmadinejad and his circle want to get around the interpretation sovereignty of the clergy over the religion and its control over the state with their Messiahnism.
