2011 March 14
This quake lasts not like usually one minute or one and a half, but terrible three minutes. An eternity. Read more:

In Japan a great earthquake of 8.8 to 8.9 magnitude occurred on Friday at 14.45 local time (06.45 CET). Numerous further quakes shook the region.

The powerful flood wave triggered by the quake swept ships, trains, houses, cars, streets and people far away into the country. At least one city was completely destroyed. Whole villages were swilled away.

The city Rikuzentakata in the Inwate prefecture is completely flooded, only few buildings still remain standing.

They are callous when it is about earthquakes. But this time people are afraid in Japan. Of aftershocks and an atom disaster.

It is 14:46 o’clock in Tokyo when a beautiful, sunny day comes to an end. A quake shakes the country as no-one has ever experienced it here. At the epicentre, about 400 kilometres north east of the capital, the seismographs show a magnitude of 8.8.

In the beginning it is like a strange feeling of dizziness, one does not understand what is happening, until one hears the sounds. They come from the building, the furniture, which is getting thrown there and back.

This earthquake is so violent that even the massive, strengthened built transmitting centre of the state TV NHK in Tokyo sways like a tanker in the storm. The steel beams creak threateningly. To many editors in the news room – used from childhood to about one thousand swayings of the earth crust per year and trained to keep calm very first – panic is written all over their faces.

And it does not want to stop. On the contrary, the quake gets stronger, TV sets overturn, shelves sway. Who can, escapes under still available places underneath tables. This quake is different, than all others before – because it does not stop. This quake lasts not like usually one minute or one and a half, but terrible three minutes. An eternity.

And the earth keeps swaying, accompanied by a muffled rumbling.

Some try to reach friends over the cell phone but the connection does not work. Fixed-lines are disconnected.
