Belgian Archbishop's Aide Quits Over Comments

Jürgen Mettepenningen resigned as the top spokesman for the Catholic Church in Belgium to protest recent comments about homosexuality and abuse scandals made by his boss, Archbishop André -Joseph Léonard.

A senior Vatican official said support for Archbishop Léonard remained strong in Rome, adding that his comments had been widely “misinterpreted.”

… , Mr. Mettepenningen's departure on Tuesday is a rare act of rebellion for a Catholic theologian, and exposes divisions within the church as it tries to face up to decades of widespread unpunished sexual abuse by its priests.

Archbishop Léonard, Belgium's top Catholic leader, recently answered a reporter's question … He also said that pedophile priests should be forgiven and that punishing them long after the facts was akin to "revenge."

His comment caused a stir in a country hit hard by the abuse scandal. Bishop Roger Vangheluwe of Bruges, a once-respected leader, admitted this spring to raping his nephew for years. He resigned and currently is in hiding, but because the crime occurred two decades ago, he has escaped punishment from the law or the Vatican.

A recent study commissioned by the church highlighted 497 cases of previously undocumented abuse. The church has said it won't compensate those victims, agreeing only to pay some therapy costs.

Archbishop Léonard has been called insensitive, and even criminal, by politicians, liberal Catholics and victims' rights groups.

Today I read an article from earlier this month and the above are quotes from it.

Thinking about the content gives me the following impressions:

The officials of the Catholic Church are more or less all involved in these crimes, either in covering them up or directly. It is so natural for them and it is practised by them already for so long that they get upset when somebody criticises them about it. The more senior leadership is not excluded at all. And these crimes have not stopped because of the revelations. Hardly anyone of them has been punished for what he did. When they get exposed they just move or get transferred to somewhere else. They very well know that the chances getting unmasked are extremely slim. When they are well-known, like a bishop, they are in hiding. But they are always in such positions that they have again access to children and can continue to with their lusts. The whole thing is consciously and purposefully kept going because it then gives everyone in that organisation the feeling that he is not only save when discovered but that there will be no interruption to his activity. It guarantees that also a high ranking member, like a bishop or a cardinal, is well protected. Transferring their members to other parishes protects them and gives them the insurance of further supply of victims. Transferring more well-known persons to overseas countries keeps them out of reach of possible prosecution. More or less everyone there is committing these crimes and knows that the chances of him having to pay for them are almost zero. The support of the Vatican for all these people remains strong. Only politicians seem to understand this system and therefore call it by its name: criminal. As long as people, especially politicians, are not doing anything about it, this terrorist association will continue to exist and to be active and the future voters, the children, will just remain unprotected. The parents will do nothing to rescue their children, because in their religious blindness they are hypnotized into inactivity.
