The clerics do not worry about the sufferings of the victims; they worry about themselves, suffering financial loss.

The day after the Roman Catholic Church in Belgium responded to its crisis over sexual abuse, a senior bishop said the church had not made a clear apology because it feared opening the door to a flood of claims for financial compensation. Read more:
In my first entry of today there was the sentence, “The church leader, Archbishop André-Joseph Léonard, said at a news conference that suffering had caused a “shiver” to run through the church, but that it was too soon for a detailed response to the crisis.”
When you now read this entry then you might come to the conclusion that the “shiver” that run through the church was a shiver of worry about the financial consequences of the crisis and that this shiver was not a shiver that was caused by the suffering of the victims but by the suffering of the abusers, that they will suffer financially and lose their job and their income and their church and their pension.
So here are now some details of a report I also read today:
The day after the Roman Catholic Church in Belgium responded to its crisis over sexual abuse, a senior bishop said the church had not made a clear apology because it feared opening the door to a flood of claims for financial compensation.
“Maybe the church was too concerned with itself. If we say ‘mea culpa,’ then we are morally responsible, legally responsible, and then people come wanting money.
“We are afraid. Who will ask — the victims, the court or someone else? That’s why we are so careful.”
Last Friday an internal church commission which has wound itself up published a 200-page report of harrowing testimony from victims of sexual abuse, dating back decades. It said that one victim was abused from the age of 2 and that 13 people had committed suicide.
