2010 June 2
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: Gomer, and all his bands: the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee. On the 10th of May 2010 I read the headline "Russia celebrates, Merkel marches along" and made an entry about it and there I referred to a previous entry of the 23rd of April 2010, "The defence situation of the West." On the 26th of May 2010 I had made reference to the prophecy of Ezekiel, who speaks of Russia and its allies, in my entry "Russia wants to reunite the former Soviet republics," and one of these allies, which are mentioned there, is Gomer, and so it seems to be interesting to find out who Gomer is.

Ezekiel 38:1-8 reads as follows:

Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them. After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.

And in it verse 6, "Gomer, and all his bands: the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee."

In the Bible Gomer is a grandchild of Noah. Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, and Gomer was the first son of Japheth.

In Genesis 5:32 the three sons of Noah are mentioned for the first time. Then again in Geneses 6:10 and also again in Genesis 7:13 and 9:18.

The important chapter in connection with all this is the 10th Chapter of Genesis. It is called "The Table of Nations."

Something similar we have in the first chapter of the first book of Chronicles. There the first section is called "Historical Records from Adam to Abraham."

Already at the start of the "The Table of Nations" in Genesis 10 the three sons of Noah are again named. The first four verses in Genesis 10 are:

Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

And therefore Genesis 10:2 is the first verse in the Bible that mentions Gomer. The other verses are Genesis 10:3, 1 Chronicle 1:5 and 1:6, and Ezekiel 38:6, which I have already quoted.

Genesis 10:1 reads, "Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood."

In this verse the already known sequence of the three sons of Noah is given. But in the next verse, in Genesis 10:2, the report does not start with oldest son, Shem, but with the youngest, Japheth, and with his children.

One could conclude from this that Noah's son Japheth was the first son who had sons himself, and the first of these was just Gomer. But it also could be that this sequence was chosen because the original author of the report was one of the three sons of Noah, namely the first one, and he therefore names his family last.

Shem was an ancestor of Jesus and also of all Jews, of all those who had Shem as their father and are therefore Semites.

So Shem was the progenitor of Abraham, of the people of Israel and of Jesus Christ. Shem was born before the flood and therefore still belonged to those people who got very old. He got 600 years old, Genesis 11:10-11, and he therefore lived longer than his descendants and saw many of his generations and still lived when Abraham was born and even still when Abraham died and was still alive when Jacob was born. So he knew all about his family. He knew the family before the flood, 98 years, and after the flood 502 years. So he was very suitable to write down the history of it.

Shem, when he was the original writer of this table of nations, writes the history of the families of his two brothers, Ham and Japheth, in this table only to the third generation after the flood, while the history of his own family goes to the sixth generation, perhaps the connections to his brothers were then no longer that good. The reason was perhaps the confusion of the languages of Babel and the scattering that followed, Genesis 11:7-9.

The second son of Noah, Ham, was the ancestor of the Canaanites, Egyptians, Sudanese, Ethiopians, Arabians.

Should you be interested in the origin of the rest of the peoples on earth, you should study the writings of Jakob Lorber.

Let us come back to the sons of Noah.

And the third son of Noah was just Japheth.

The second verse in the table of Nations, Genesis 10:2, reads: "The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras."

According to this we could list the children of Noah as follows:

1. Shem
2. Ham
3. Japheth
       3.1 Gomer
       3.2 Magog
       3.3 Madai
       3.4 Javan
       3.5 Tubal
       3.6 Meshech
       3.7 Tiras

These sons are the ancestors of the Indo-European peoples. The names have been modified gradually during the passage of time but the table of nations as well as secular historical writings and archaeological discoveries point in this direction.

Some think that the name Japheth is similar to the legendary father of the Greeks and also to the ancestors of the Ariens in India.

The first son of Japheth, Gomer, is generally identified with the area of Cimmeria, north of the Black Sea and there is supposed to be a similarity of the words Gomer an Crimea.

One branch of the descendants of Gomer eventually moved to the west and the name was probably preserved both in Germany and Cambria, Wales.

The second verse in the table of nations reads as follows in the translation by James Moffat, A New Translation of the Bible:

The descendants of Japheth were the Cimmerians, Magog, the Medes, the Ionians, Tubal, Meshek, and Tiras.

We now come to the sons of Gomer.

The third verse in the table of nations, Genesis 10:3, reads: "And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah."

Our list then looks like this:

1. Shem
2. Ham
3. Japheth
       3.1 Gomer
               3.1.1 Ashkenaz
               3.1.2 Riphath
               3.1.3 Togarmah
       3.2 Magog
       3.3 Madai
       3.4 Javan
       3.5 Tubal
       3.6 Meshech
       3.7 Thiras

The Jews identify Ashkenaz with Germany and still today German Jews are called the Ashkenazi. It is also assumed that the name Ashkenaz has been retained in the names of Scandinavia and Saxon. Other descendants of Ashkenaz remained in the region of Armenia which was called Sakasene.

Riphath was another son of Gomer. He is the ancestor of the Paphlagonians. He also could be the ancestor of the Carpathians. The word Europe could even be a corruption of Riphath.

The third son of Gomer is Togarmah. It is almost certain that he is the ancestor of the Armenians. Even the traditions of the Armenians claim this. Also the word Germany is to come from Togarma. Turkey and Turkestan also have possibly a connection with Togarmah.

So Gomer was the first son of Japheth. The second son of Japheth has the name Magog, and this name could mean "the place of Gog" and therefore could refer to Georgia, an area near the Black Sea which is still known today under that name. Magog or Gog was probably the ancestor of the Scythians, who originally also lived in the Black Sea area.

Magog is mentioned in the Bible in connection with two others sons of Japheth: Meshech and Thubal. And this especially in that part of the Bible which we have mentioned at the beginning, in Ezekiel 38.

In the name Muskovi is Meshech clearly preserved. Muskovi is the former name of Russia, and Moscow.

Tubal is probably contained in the Russian city Tobolsk.

Verse 2 in Ezekiel 38 reads in The Jerusalem Bible as follows:

"Son of man, turn towards Gog and the country of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal, and prophecy against him."

The name Russia is to come from this word Rosh.

So generally therefore the three sons of Japheth, namely Magog, Meshech and Tubal, can be considered as the ancestors of the Russians.

Madai is supposed to be the ancestor of the Medes. The Medes are today known as the Kurds. They settled in Persia which is Iran today and were probably in part the ancestors of the Persians. Through this group of Japhethites evidently the Aryans developed. The Arians later moved into India and became the progenitors of the Indian peoples.

The name Javan was seemingly the original form of the word Ionier, which means Greece.

We already dealt with Greece as we investigated the prophecy of Daniel in Daniel 8. In Daniel 8:21 Greece is mentioned - Grecia. The word for Greece is the number 3120 in Strong's Concordance and is described there as: Javan, the name of a son of Joktan, and of the race (Ionians, i.e. Greeks) descended from him, with their territory.

Both, Japheth and his son Javan, are considered to be the original founders of the Greeks.

We have here looked at this first part of the table of nations to find out more details about the peoples involved, which are named in Ezekiel 38, and to now once again establish the reference to the end times, I want to quote here Ezekiel 38:14-16:

Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it? And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army: And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.

There are many details mentioned in the two chapters 38 and 39 of Ezekiel and one of them is found in 39:9, where the 7 years are mentioned, where they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall burn the weapons with fire seven years.

The two chapters 38 and 39 of Ezekiel are therefore "A Prophecy against Gog" and it is this that we look at, and we do it to follow the present developments in the north of Israel, especially in East Europe, and compare these with these prophecies.

We do this as there are at present signs that Russia is busy to gather the hordes of peoples which are mentioned in Ezekiel.

Read the two chapters 38 and 39 in Ezekiel; they are quite impressive, and when you add to this chapter 37 then you have an imposing number of prophecies referring to the reestablishment of Israel as country in the year 1948.

Just in the last few days there were many outcries against Israel and such occasions can easily be the excuse to wage an aggressive war against Israel.

In Ezekiel 39:28 God says that then shall the house of Israel know that he is the Lord their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but he has gathered them unto their own land.

When God will have wiped out this great military force, which moves against Israel, then it will be obvious to all who are willing to know who is Lord. It will be a great sign for the people in Israel and also for all men on earth.
