Three days ago I wrote the article “Russia wants to reunite former Soviet republics” and had drawn for this purpose on the 38th chapter of the prophet Ezekiel and today, on the 29th of May 2010, I read an article which provides interesting information for this:
Russia invites Ukraine into military alliance.
Kremlin boss Dmitry Medvedev has spoken up for a strengthened cooperation of neighbouring countries at his visit to Kiev, so also in case of defence. But the Ukraine stressed its neutral status.
Dmitry Medvedev encouraged Kiev to join the military alliance of former Soviet republics. In case the Ukraine would want an entry into the treaty in future about Collective Security, the country would be welcome, said the Russian president on Tuesday (18.05.2010) in the Ukrainian capital. The 1992 founded organization of the treaty about collective security (OVKS) is “no repeat of the Warsaw Pact and also no anti Nato,” Medvedev stressed. Besides Russia Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Armenia belong to the alliance.
The Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich emphasized the neutral status of his country to his Russian counterpart. After his assumption of office in February this year Yanukovich had declared the Ukraine to be a non-aligned country and shelved the plans of his predecessor Viktor Yushchenko for a Nato membership, but did not rule out the continuation of the previous cooperation.
Yanukovich has declared the rapprochement of the Ukraine to the European Union as one of his most important aims.
