The Time That the Daily Sacrifice Shall be Taken Away, and the Abomination That Maketh Desolate Set Up - Comment on 2009 February 16

In the year 2007 I read a prophecy that stated the following: "The seven years full of suffering you will well have to experience but they will pass you like silhouettes, attacking and dispatching many that remained strangers to me that walked apart their ways and that did not want to project themselves into their true destiny. The Lord in his strength will then be revealed to these - but then such bitter suffering will darken their days that they will listen to reason at the last hour. Declare now in my name my word to these and you will lighten their long ordeal for them. The hard time will make them compliant and many will then still accept the teaching of Christ - and will be blessed."

That was part of what Bertha Dudde wrote down on 31. March 1938 and numbered as B.D. NR. 356.

As I read it I noticed this detail mentioned there: 7 years. I wrote it down in my notes that I kept as some sort of evaluation and record keeping of what I was reading. Then on 16th February 2009 I went through these notes and saw it and it caught my eye because in the meantime I had become more interested in the end-times and it also reminded me of the 7 years mentioned in Ezekiel 39:9 where they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall set on fire and burn the weapons and they shall burn them with fire seven years.

So the 7 years where brought back to my mind and these 7 years also reminded me of the 3.5 years mentioned in prophecies somewhere else.

So I decided to have closer look at the duration of the end-times.

In Daniel 12:11 we read: "And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days."

These 1,290 days are about 3.53 years.

So here we have the 3.5 years.

The main spiritual aspect of the times of the end is the war against Spirituality. The closer the end draws the more severe this war against everything that is of a spiritual nature will become. This war has been on since eternities, it is the war against God. But the end will come when the enemy of God will force people to drop their belief in God. Then free will is not anymore possible - the possibility for men to decide for or against God under free conditions is not anymore given - and God's opponent has overstepped his limitations and he will be cast into the pit and that means that he will be banished into hardest matter for a long time.

Daniel 12:11 suggest two steps that will be undertaken. The first is that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away and the second is that the abomination that maketh desolate is set up.

And between these two events there seems to be a time of 1,290 days. But having a closer look it seems rather that these two events follow each other and the second event is just the natural consequence of the first one and that both events are happening at the same time - even on the same day, because from that day on the 1,290 days start counting.

If that is so then what is the event that happens after the 1,290 days have passed?

May be the answer can be found in verse 13: But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

So here two times the end is mentioned and that is it probably what at the end of the 1,290 days will be - the end.

But verse 12 adds another 45 days, so the end might happen in two stages.

Verse 4 of Daniel 12 also indicates that the end is really the subject of that chapter. And in verse 7 the end is again the subject: And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and a half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

So Daniel 12:7 is the place where the 3.5 years come from. And "when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people" seems to be a reference to the war against God seemingly being won by the enemy of God. And when this is done then all these things shall be finished - the end will have arrived.

But it also could be a reference to the re-establishment of Israel and when that has been done then the end can come because one translation says, "and when they have made an end of shattering and crushing the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished."

The first interpretation seems to be closer to the meaning because when one looks at an Interlinear Bible then it sounds something like this: "And when they finish breaking the power (of the) holy people's, be shall finished all."

A similar expression is used in Revelation 12:14, "And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent."

And in Daniel 7:25, "And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time."

The expression "change times" could mean that he is not happy us counting our years from the time of Christ's birth. He might think to change this.

So we have this duration of 1,290 days or 3.5 years or a time and times and a half time.

The beginning of this duration seems to be indicated by "the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up" and the end of this duration by the end of the world.

"The time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up" sounds like a severe intervention to religious and spiritual practice.

It will be a matter of observing the development to see what these two things will be. The first one might have a spiritual nature - of preventing people from turning their thoughts to spiritual things - to God. It might affect people who are not too sure about what they are doing and entices them to abandon some spiritual practice like practising the presence of God or just something that could just generally be called prayer. But it also could mean the introduction of something more formal like the prohibition of meetings of a spiritual nature, or of organizations that practise some beliefs in the supernatural or the prohibition of churches or church buildings and temples of any kind.

The time before this event will probably have seen already the exposing of all the hypocritical things of religion and most of the religious guys have already duck out and closed their religious businesses because their lack of real knowledge of the spiritual side of what they were doing was causing them to loose all arguments and let them appear as incompetent. And the few genuine believers in these religious organisations will now realize that their spiritual foundation is not too good and they will be forced to now study for themselves and find out what the truth is and may be they will turn to those who through their ability to defend the truth have emerged and learn from them how to really walk in love and how to be a believer in real practical terms.

But now the time of discussing spiritual things is more or less over and the time has arrived when they will be out and not anymore wanted and prohibited.

So a great part of spiritual people has already been sorted out and been dealt with and they have now been caused to abandon their cause and let it go and may have even joint the dark side.

But the more these have been eliminated the more the heat will be turned on those who are the hard core of spiritual people that is still left and the war against God will now concentrate on them.

The abomination that maketh desolate will be set up.

There was a time in Germany when the Jews were forced to wear an outside sign that enabled everybody to immediately recognize them as Jews. They were then treated as outcast, at least by those who adhered to the policy of the ruling authority.

But at the end it will be more a matter of beliefs and of thinking and of what people dare to advocate and proclaim than of simply identifying a certain race or religion.

The altar is the place where the offering is. The altar is the place where we offer God our thoughts, it is our mind. Our will decides what we offer. So it is decision time. And the decision is made by our will. We have free will and can decide for or against God. So the crucial thing is: what will we put on the altar? What kind of thoughts will we entertain? Now it is difficult for others to see what is on the altar - what is on the mind - so they will find a way to find out. Now the dark forces want that all thoughts about God and about the spiritual realm and about the things of a spiritual nature are abandoned, that they are not anymore on the mind, that they are not anymore on the altar. They want the altar to be empty - desolate. In order to achieve this they will introduce the abomination. Now this abomination will be something that prevents - or is supposed to prevent - that there is any offer on the altar. The altar is to be empty. This has of course also something to do with the intellect. With an empty altar people will also have an empty mind and that means that they will have switched off their ability to intellectually evaluate and judge and stay on top of the situation and remain in charge of life and not become enslaved to darkness.

So we now could speculate what this abomination might be. It might be something that reveals our thoughts and our acts, that has something to do with our thinking, our forehead, and with the things we do, our hands. So it might be something that monitors our thoughts, words and activities. It might simply be an outward sign that does not designate us as outcast but a sign that exposes those who do not display it. There was something more harmless in Germany at the time when the Jews were supposed to wear this outside sign and that was the way people greeted each other. When somebody greeted another person by simply saying "good morning" then this was already something like a political statement because he simply did not greet the way the authorities wanted everyone to greet and that was to use certain words and certain movements of the body. So there also was the mind - the forehead - and the act - the hand - involved. So the abomination will be a thing that will become very clear when the time arrives.

So everybody will perhaps be requested to wear a sign and who does not do so might be easily recognizable and can then be treated like an outcast. This sign might be even quite sophisticated and be some sort of electronic device with sender and receiver and the authorities can simply switch it off when certain investigations cause them to decide that the bearer should not be allowed to use it. Every check-out point in sales outlets and banks etc. might only be operated with this device being activated. The device might even be used by the authorities to record everything that is heard, seen, smelled, tasted und felt, and this then is sent to them and they then save it and it then can be investigated under certain circumstances. Simultaneously the location of the device and therefore of the person attached to it could be monitored. The device could also function in such a way that it instructs the people behind a check-out point or a counter to arrest the person attached to it. So the device will be an imitation of the way God knows everything about us and can intervene whenever he wants to, with the only difference that it will be a poor imitation and that God wants only the best for us and leaves us free will and antichrist wants to enslave us and wants only to steal, and to kill and to destroy.

Now under such conditions it is obvious that only such believers will be able to sustain themselves who have the ability to really rely on God. They will simply rely on God providing what they need and will receive their physical sustenance like food from God in a supernatural way or they will be fed by the spiritual food only and this spiritual bread of life will also feed them bodily. God's power is unlimited and as they have experienced this in their life before they will have no problems being fed. And others might look at them and see what happens to them and they also become believers - and fed.

An example of this setting up of the abomination that maketh desolate is here in the book of Daniel in the third chapter. The king Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold and set it up and all were then supposed to worship it. There also two acts were required: falling down and worshipping. That what happened in the mind, the emptying of the altar, was outwardly expressed by a bodily act. Nebuchadnezzar's empire was big and so not all people were ordered to come but only the important ones. When the whole world is to be incorporated at the end, it will be too complicated to bring all men to this image, or even just the important ones, and so the image will be brought to them and everybody has to carry it around. And he who does not do this is immediately visible the same way as if he would not fall down.

When we start to think about the attitude we are to have at these times of trouble then we should simple adopt that of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Let them throw us in the burning fiery furnace. The result will just be that nothing happens to us and that we then will get promoted. So chapter 3 of Daniel is worth studying.

So the more we study and know about the things of God the more we can relax and remain calm and let the times of the end come and we then use them to help others and exercise our will in the right way - to always be close to God - and expect the Lord of Lords and his salvation and the paradise on the new earth.

Now the next verse in Daniel 12, verse 12, also gives us a period: "Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days."

Here we have 1,335 days.

Now in Daniel 12:12 no events seem to be mentioned. But as it directly follows Daniel 12:11 it probably also directly refers to it. It seems that the first event, the event when the counting is starting, is the same event. The difference between 1,335 and 1,290 is 45 days. So 45 days after the 1,290 days have expired is the day that is worth waiting for.

It seems to be good idea to set up a spreadsheet with these dates or better with these differences between dates and when the first event has occurred put this date into the sheet and let it then show the dates when these given number of days expire.

The main purpose of prophecy is not so much to tell us when things are going to happen but the purpose is more to recognize when things have happened, to see the signs of the times and acknowledge that what had been prophesied is happening. And this recognition will be the thing that matters. It will make us strong because our faith in him who really rules will get strengthened and this faith will make us strong and we will know that we can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth us.

Now the beginning of this counting is the time when the daily sacrifice shall be taken away. In Daniel 8:11 this event is also mentioned. So keeping reading these parts of the Bible will obviously help to better recognize the events when they happen.

In verse 5 a force coming from the west is mentioned. Now this force (Daniel 8:10) waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.

Now this looks like spiritual warfare. It looks as if spiritual beings, or people who are supposed to be spiritual, are fought and are defeated.

In verse 10 of Daniel 8 we saw that the goat cast down some of the host and of the stars - and that could mean spiritual beings, saints or angels. And then Daniel 8:11 comes and there the daily sacrifice is mentioned again:

Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.

But more information follows. Let us read Daniel 8:12.

And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.

And a third time the daily sacrifice is mentioned, in the next verse, Daniel 8:13.

Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?

And in Daniel 8:14 the answer is given.

And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

So here we have another number of days: 2,300.

Now 2,300 days are 6.3 years. This is less than 7 years.

So at the end of these 2,300 days the sanctuary will be cleansed. This could be the day of judgement when the surface of the earth is cleansed of all the goats and when then the old earth is destroyed and the new earth emerges and the saints return to live on this new earth and therefore in paradise.

In verse 13 three events are mentioned that take place during these 2,300 days:

the vision concerning the daily sacrifice,

the rebellion that causes desolation, and

the surrender of the sanctuary and of the host that will be trampled underfoot.

So here is something to be investigated.

The starting point is the vision of daily sacrifice.

In Daniel 8:17 it is clearly stated by Gabriel that this vision of Daniel is meant for the end of times: O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision. And in Daniel 8:19 Gabriel repeats it, the word end is used two times.

This prophecy of Daniel could also apply to the setting up of the abomination of desolation upon the altar in Jerusalem in the year 167 BC by Antiochus IV Epiphanes and to the subsequent rededication of the altar by Judas Maccabeus in the year 164 BC.

But between these two events there is only an intervening period of 3 years and not of 6.3 years.

The first event, the setting up of the abomination of desolation upon the altar, is mentioned in 1 Maccabees 1:54 and happened in the year 145 according to the calendar of that time, and the second event, the rededication of the altar, is mentioned in 1 Maccabees 4:52 and happened in the year 148 according to the calendar of that time.

So there seem to be at least two reasons why these events, that happened 400 years after Daniel, are not predicted here. The first is that the duration is only 3 years and not 6.3 years and the second is that Daniel points to the end several times.

The first reason however is not really valid as the period of 6.3 years is not just containing the time when the altar will be desecrated. The period of the time the altar was desecrated lasted exactly 3 years at the time of Judas Maccabeus. In 1 Maccabees 4:54 it is nicely described: On the anniversary of the day when the Gentiles had profaned it, on that very day, it was rededicated, with hymns of thanksgiving, to the music of harps and lutes and cymbals.

And that the time of profanation of the altar lasted exactly 3 years at the time of Judas Maccabeus could be an indication that it will also last exactly 3 years at the time before the second coming of the Lord. So this would make a calculation of dates even more complicated because the 3.5 years don't seem to fit anymore. May be this is it what Jesus ment when he said that the days will be shortened (Matthew 24:22 and Mark 13:20). May be all our measuring will finally be in vain and the day of days comes much earlier than the wise and learned predict.

We also have of course to allow a prophecy to apply to more than just one event. Different events in history might well apply to the same prophecy as one being a type of another. So we should not limit the fulfilment of a prophecy to just one event and to one time in history.

The last king of Juda rejected the prophecies regarding his end that the two mighty prophets, Jeremiah and Ezekiel, had predicted, and with this attitude he therefore did not prepare himself for it and did not amend his ways because he did not believe in the end and then the end came and what he had assumed to be a contradiction was not a contradiction at all but bitter reality - for him. He thought it could not be possible that he could be taken to Babylon, as one of the prophets had prophesied, and that he could not see Babylon, as the other prophet had prophesied, and then it happened exactly as he was told: he was taken to Babylon but before that his eyes were taken out.

So it can be quite risky to not believe in the end. So it is also quite risky to reject prophecies because they are seemingly full of contradictions. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Don't copy Zedekiah. Do not think the end will not come or will come later.

Now in Revelation 11:2-3 we find some more durations:

But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

42 months are 3.5 years or 1,278 days. And a thousand two hundred and threescore days are 1,260 days.

The treading under foot of the holy city for 42 months could mean the persecution of Christ's church, the holy city, the New Jerusalem. These 3.5 years could be the second half of the end-times right up to the day of the rapture, when the persecution stops.

The 1,260 days are related to the two witnesses. May be their appearing and 1,260 days later when they get killed, and another 3.5 days later when they are getting resurrected and when they then ascend, can also somehow get tied into a schedule of events.

Both durations, 1,278 days and also 1,260 days, are shorter than the 1,290 days in Daniel 12:11 and would therefore fit into this duration and with it into the second half of the end-times.

This also would apply to the 1,260 + 3.5 = 1,263.5 days. The time of the two witnesses and the time of the treading under foot of the holy city, would so be shorter than the time from the taking away of the daily sacrifice and the setting up of the abomination that maketh desolate until the end of the world - the 1,290 days.

All these events would practically then be in the same time period.

The problem with durations of this kind as we have studied them in Daniel and in Revelations is to recognize the events that are involved. To match world events with events mentioned in a prophecy is the task. Now the easiest event to recognize is the last one, the rapture and the following judgement. Nobody will have problems with that one. So may be a way to approach the other events is to count backwards.

From Daniel 12:11+12 we have seen that there are 45 days between two events: 45 days after the 1,290 days have expired is the day that is worth waiting for.

Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the 1,335 days. This probably means a man who does not give in to the pressures of worshiping darkness and endures until the end and resists all attempts to fall away from God. So it could be the day of the actual end, the day of the rapture and the day of judgement.

If this is the case then 45 days before this day will be the day when the second last event happens - when 1,290 days expire. The 45 days that follow this event will seemingly have a special significance.

The third last event will then be the event at the beginning of the 1,290 days or of the beginning of the 1,335 days. It will be the day that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away and the abomination that maketh desolate is set up.

To recognize this day, the third last event, should be easier than to recognize second last event. It will probably be a day where significant measures are introduced that everybody will know about.

So the day that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away and the abomination that maketh desolate is set up will then be 1,335 days before the end.

Now all this sounds easy and straight forward but there is one very important detail that causes us to doubt this calculation and that is the fact that God again and again has proclaimed that the day of the end is known to him alone and to nobody else.

The fourth last event would then be the day that is at the beginning of the 2,300 days mentioned in Daniel 8:14. That day would be 2,300 days before the end because the end is described there as the day when the sanctuary is cleansed, assuming that the end is meant by this cleansing and that the sanctuary is the earth.

Now the 2,300 days refer to a time when the following things happen (Daniel 8:13):

the vision concerning the daily sacrifice,

the rebellion that causes desolation, and

the surrender of the sanctuary and of the host that will be trampled underfoot.

So to interpret these details would lead to the beginning of the end-times. The day these 2,300 days are beginning to be counted seems to be a significant day otherwise the time period would not have been given in days. It is a period of 6.3 years and it is unusual to give such a long time as number of days. May be the day will become clear when it occurs.

There could also be a difference between these 6.3 years and the 7 years. The difference is 0.7 years, but it is probably just easier to speak of 7 years and not of 6.3 years.

The event that will really signify that the end times have started is the event of the earth upheaval. Information about the war before this earth upheaval and how long it will last and when it will begin does not seem to be too clear. So the event of the earth upheaval would then be the event we could start counting. It also seems to be the event were practically the trouble for all people on earth will begin, even for those who are not directly affected by it because the effects will be felt on the whole surface of the earth, especially the psychological effects.

The effect of the earth upheaval will be mainly of a physical nature. These physical problems will be the cause of many psychological problems, but little religious persecution. So the end-times will start with physical problems and then the psychological pressure due to persecution of the saints will start to build up, reach a formal point where certain measures are introduced and then probably reach a climax of 45 days and then the end comes: it is total physical and psychological disaster - for the majority of people. For the saints it will be liberation and life in paradise.

So there will be four major events:

The re-establishment of Israel. This event is behind us. It happened on Friday, 14. May 1948.

The earth upheaval. It will mark the beginning of the endtimes.

The time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate is set up. This will be about 3.5 years after the earth upheaval and 3.5 years before the end.

The end in the form of the rapture and the last judgement: the destruction of the old earth including all living beings that are left after the rapture.
